Aléz Odendaal

I’m a writer from the itty-bitty coastal town, East London, but these days I do most of my work from home on the foothills of Lion’s Head. You can find out more about me below. Like what you see? Send me a message through the contact page. If it’s urgent or you’re working with a tight deadline, know that emails are delivered to a well-tended inbox; I’ll get back to you ‘quick, fast, and in a hurry, honey’, as my gran always says.

Past Work

I began my career as an intern at GQ, after a lecturer at CityVaristy put my name forward as a promising candidate. Fancy. I was later promoted to Online Editorial Assistant across GQ and GLAMOUR while beginning my second year at University of Cape Town.

I would then go on to hold positions at IGN, Cosmopolitan, Private Edition, and Penguin Random House (UK), and to work on freelance projects (big and small) for many others, including Marie Claire, MAXIM, MaximumPop!, TheGamer, Telkom, St. Luke’s Hospice, Beauty South Africa, and the SABC.

All of this amounts to just over eight years of experience in the content and media industry, spread across varied fields of interest; beauty, technology, video games, lifestyle, culture, travel, wellness, entertainment, business, and even human resources.

Writing of all kinds - features, creative, copywriting (including product and social media), blogs, scripts (TV and YouTube), public relations, business, investigative reporting, ghostwriting, and personal writing services like vows, speeches, dedications, life stories for the elderly, letters, and eulogies.

Content creation - content plans and style guides, visual assets, product photography, prop styling, production management for creative teams, research, content management, and consulting.

Design - Squarespace website design for small businesses, wellness teachers, and creatives.

Social media management - community management, account monitoring, responding to client queries, consumer-facing content creation, and asset creation.

Presenting and hosting - interviews and events hosting, as well as podcast and TV appearances.

Movement and wellness - private and corporate yoga sessions for beginners and intermediates.

Working with Aléz is an absolute dream. She works fast, is super responsive in communicating timelines, and seriously over delivers. She has a talent for understanding your brand, and picks up the appropriate tone of voice really quickly. I can’t recommend her enough.
What a carefully-crafted experience it was to be led by Alez. I felt so much of the process helped me connect things I hadn’t before. Her knowledge and expertise are visceral, and there was a real sense of being in the hands of a Master.
— Elaine Rumboll, Creative leadership agency
Aléz has always brought a deep integrity to her writing; empathy for conflicted human beings in difficult circumstances and a determination to offer herself to the telling of the story, no matter the personal or psychic cost. She effortlessly melds the duties of journalist and story teller, employing justice and honesty as her guiding principles.
— Megan Ross, Milk Fever
